H.E. Kuckein

Kelowna, British Columbia

H. E. Kuckein's paintings often merge landscape and still life with linear abstraction. He is able to heighten the strength of his subject with superb colour tones, achieving an inviting serenity even while employing a dramatic and intense palette. Kuckein's colours are unusual and refreshing. The purity of his palette, whether intense or muted, harmonizes into richness on the canvas.

Input from the viewer is critical in much of Kuckein's work. Not everything is explained. His work is intriguing yet serene, perhaps because he chooses to focus on the essential, introducing only those lines or a colours he deems absolutely necessary.

Kuckein was born in Koenigsberg, East Prussia, before the Second World War. After many adventures around the world, he settled in Vancouver where he practiced architecture until his retirement to paint full time almost a decade ago.
